Tacoma — Model Guide

The new gen, demystified.

Eight trims, two turbo powertrains, and a hybrid option — the redesigned Tacoma has a lot of menu. Here’s how to find the combination that’s actually the sweet spot for you.

The Tacoma is the truck people cross-shop the most and overthink the most, because the redesign brought a long trim ladder and overlapping prices. Strip away the noise and it’s a pretty clean decision.

What’s new

The current Tacoma rides on Toyota’s modern truck platform (shared with the 4Runner and Tundra family), drops the old V6 for turbocharged four-cylinder power, adds a hybrid, and finally has a modern interior and tech. It’s a big step up in livability without losing the off-road toughness it’s known for.

i-FORCE vs i-FORCE MAX

The standard i-FORCE turbo-four makes up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft (the base SR is detuned to 228 hp). It’s strong, efficient enough, and the right engine for most buyers.

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid bumps that to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft with instant low-end torque — great for towing and trail work. It’s available on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited, and standard on Trailhunter and TRD Pro. Worth it if you tow or wheel; otherwise the standard i-FORCE saves money.

Trailhunter vs TRD Pro

Same split as the 4Runner: TRD Pro is the high-speed performance off-roader (FOX shocks, the fast-and-rough build), while Trailhunter is the overlanding rig set up to be loaded with gear and driven deep into the backcountry. Both are hybrid, both are halo trims, both are hard to get. Pick TRD Pro to play, Trailhunter to expedition.

Picking a trim

  • SR / SR5 — the value end; SR5 is where most buyers should start.
  • TRD Sport — on-road-oriented with the TRD look.
  • TRD Off-Road — the sweet spot if you actually leave pavement; available with i-FORCE MAX.
  • Limited — the comfortable, loaded daily-driver Tacoma.
  • Trailhunter / TRD Pro — the specialized halo builds.

Properly equipped, the Tacoma tows up to about 6,500 lbs — plenty for a small camper or a couple of side-by-sides.

Availability

Mainstream trims come and go; the hybrid and the off-road halos (Trailhunter, TRD Pro) are the reserve-ahead builds. See hard-to-find Toyotas for how to get matched to one.
