Grand Highlander — Model Guide

Hybrid vs Hybrid MAX.

A real third row adults can sit in, and the trim decision most people get wrong. Here’s who should pay up for Hybrid MAX — and who absolutely shouldn’t.

5-minute read · Updated June 2026

The Grand Highlander solved the one real complaint about the regular Highlander: a third row grown-ups can actually use. It’s become one of the fastest-selling things Toyota makes, and the place people overthink is the powertrain.

Hybrid vs Hybrid MAX

The standard Hybrid makes 245 horsepower and returns around 34–36 MPG. It’s the right answer for the overwhelming majority of buyers — quiet, efficient, and plenty for hauling the family and a normal load.

The Hybrid MAX swaps in a turbocharged setup for 362 horsepower and a six-speed automatic (AWD only). It’s genuinely quick and tows more — but it drops you to roughly 27 MPG and only comes on the upper trims.

My rule: buy Hybrid MAX if you actually tow regularly or you want the performance and you’ve made peace with the fuel and price. If you’re buying it “just in case,” you’re paying for capability you won’t use — the standard Hybrid is the smarter money.

What about the gas one?

There’s a turbocharged gas Grand Highlander (265 hp) too. It’s the cheapest way in, but the standard Hybrid’s mileage advantage is large enough that most buyers in our area are better served stepping to the hybrid — and the hybrids are what people actually want, so they hold value better.

Trims, decoded

  • XLE Hybrid — the value sweet spot for most families.
  • Limited — the comfort step that’s worth it; also where Hybrid MAX becomes available.
  • Nightshade — blacked-out styling on the standard Hybrid for the murdered-out look.
  • Platinum (Hybrid MAX) — fully loaded and quick, for the buyer who wants it all.

Availability

Demand has jumped dramatically and Hybrid MAX builds in particular tend to be claimed before they reach the lot. This is a reserve-ahead vehicle — see hard-to-find Toyotas for the why.
